Mira Murati, who previously worked behind the scenes as chief technology officer at OpenAI, overseeing the development and delivery of products such as ChatGPT and DALL-E, is now stepping into the limelight as the company’s interim chief executive. Ms. Murati, who was born in Albania and educated in Canada, is a mechanical engineer by training. She joined OpenAI in 2018 after working at Tesla and Leap Motion.
Ms. Murati had been functioning as the company’s head of operations, taking care of its relationships with Microsoft and shaping its artificial intelligence policy. She is praised for her ability to assemble teams with technical expertise and commercial acumen and her deep appreciation for the importance of the company’s mission.
Despite her previous role, she had been executing decisions made by the company’s senior leaders. Ms. Murati is known for her appearances on “The Daily Show,” Bloomberg TV, and at various conferences to bring A.I. technologies into the public consciousness in a responsible and safe manner.
