Collaborative Efforts of Truck Manufacturers in Advancing Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure

4M electric cars are in the US, but <1,000 are heavy-duty trucks. 3 big truck makers are calling for more charging stations, an improved electricity grid, and other measures to promote battery or hydrogen-powered trucks. Powering America’s Commercial Transportation is a new organization that aims to promote these efforts. Inflation Reduction Act provides $1B for electric trucks. Truck companies claim they have gotten less attention from governments than car manufacturers. According to data from the Department of Energy, there are only 9 fast charging stations for heavy trucks in the US. The biggest source of greenhouse gases is transportation, with 29 percent of vehicle emissions coming from trucks, buses and vans. Zero-emissions trucks are 2-3x more expensive than diesel trucks and companies like Volvo Trucks and Daimler Truck have been accused of trying to slow down the process of moving away from fossil fuels. Tesla has won over many car customers, but hasn't had the same impact on truck manufacturing. Regulations and less powerful chargers are slowing the electric truck industry's growth. However, electric delivery vans are growing quickly and are predicted to continue growing.
