Revolutionizing Addiction Treatment: A.I. and Lasers Tackle Smartphone Dependency

My palm was illuminated with an aqua blue light, displaying a menu. I scrolled by circling my wrist and selected an item by pinching my index finger and thumb together. A two-inch square magnetic pin from Humane called the Ai Pin, attached to my sweater, allowed me to send a text message with a soft “clink.”

Speaking caused my words to project instantly into my hand, and squeezing my fist sent the message with a “whoosh” sound. The Ai Pin offers features such as answering questions, making calls, sending texts, playing music, and taking photos. It will cost $699 with a $24 monthly subscription, available for pre-order on Nov. 16, and expected to ship by early 2024.

Although the technology felt magical and awkward, the pinching motion was particularly enjoyable. The Ai Pin is designed to fade into the background of everyday life, unlike smartphones that constantly demand our attention with notifications. Users must touch the device to wake it, and it utilizes artificial intelligence technology to deliver information conversationally.

Overall, the device aims to keep users from disappearing into their screens and getting distracted. It is a new and unique take on wearable technology, giving users access to various features while minimizing screen time.
