A bipartisan House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party has asked the U.S. Commerce Department to investigate whether the technology company G42, which is controlled by the ruling family of the United Arab Emirates, should be subject to trade restrictions due to its ties with China. G42 is involved in artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies, and has signed agreements with major American tech companies such as Microsoft, Dell and OpenAI. The company also works extensively with Chinese entities, including the military and intelligence services. This has raised concerns that advanced American technology could be transferred to China through G42. The committee has asked the Commerce Department to consider imposing export controls on G42 and 13 affiliated companies, most of which are based in China. The Commerce Department has until February 2 to act or provide an explanation to lawmakers. G42 has denied any wrongdoing and maintains that it is in full compliance with U.S. government regulations.
